French Inline Cup 2002: Stage 1, Marathon de Nice

Lannezval and Deniaud take a stroll on the Promenade des Anglais

By Vincent Esnault

Inline Speed skating is a true universal sport. For anybody who still doubts that fact, take note that the first stage of the FIC 2002 took place April 21st, on the historical Promenade des Anglais. Nestled between the sea and palm trees, France’s top national inliners took to the Promenade for a total of 11 loops on a 2.5 km circuit.

The Nice Marathon was the first important meeting of the season, allowing the contenders to gauge their early season form and that, of their adversaries. The national teams present were Salomon, Salomon CDK, Rollerblade National, Mogema and Levallois Sporting Club.

From the first kilometers, the strongest racers were: Salomon’s Richard Deniaud and Mickaël Lannezval. After several attempts, they were able to breakaway from the pack, and glued to them were Nicolas Jaffrain (Salomon CDK) and Benoît Perthuis (Rollerblade). The pack seemed resigned to let them escape.

At the end of countless attacks and at the beginning of the last loop, the two Salomon hot shots managed to escape definitively and keep a comfortable distance from their pursuers. They would take the first two places on the podium, Lannezval in first and Deniaud in second. Benoît Perthuis won the sprint between himself and Nicolas Jaffrain, completing the podium in 3rd place.

The main pack’s final sprint saw Thomas Fortin (Roces) evince Rollerblade’s Pierre Garand who had been leading during the final kilometer.

Team Salomon were the victors of the day. The season appears to hold many surprises for the racers as the competition looks fierce on the individual and team level. With eight stages on the FIC schedule each team should see its day of glory and success.
